American Roots Music Week May 9-16, 2020

With host teachers Dave Bing and Beverly Smith, along with Kate Lissauer, Johnny Whelan and others TBC

This promises to be an amazing week, with the usual La Fuente attractions of great food, great company, and the lovely Andalusian countryside, and we will be offering our most extensive list of class option ever! The emphasis is on traditional musical styles of the USA, especially those wonderful tunes, songs and rhythms from the Appalachian region. The week will be offering classes in fiddle, banjo, guitar, and group duet singing. In addition, our guest teachers may offer classes on their favourite topics, such as percussive step dance, various banjo styles, beginners’ instrumental, ukulele, or singing with your instrument.  In fact, you can request tuition in any topic related to old-time country music, and we will  do our best to accommodate you.

Dave Bing has been a master teacher at this week since its inception fifteen years ago.  He is a master of old-time and bluegrass fiddle, as well as banjo and guitar, and is widely considered to be the most accomplished and knowledgeable living practitioner of old-time music in West Virginia.  Dave has learned directly from many of the old masters of traditional fiddle and banjo styles, and has also developed his own superlative style of playing which  now inspires players the world over.  Dave plays with West Virginia’s top string bands, and works extensively as a teacher. He is an important presence at the Appalachian music festivals, as a judge an instructor, and he has an additional vocation as a builder of highly sought-after violins.

This is an exciting opportunity to work intimately with Beverly Smith, one of the most respected old-time musicians on the scene today. Beverly is well known as a guitarist, fiddler, mandolin player and singer who has had a long career working with an extensive array of the best and most creative of contemporary old-time artists and string bands.  Her collaborations include backing up fiddlers Bruce Molsky, Rafe Stefanini, Tara Nevins and Brad Leftwich, singing with Irish musicians Mick Moloney and John Doyle, and with bluegrass great Laurie Lewis, and performing in a duet with Alice Gerrard.  She achieved international regard as a part of a highly acclaimed old-time music duet act with Carl Jones.  In addition to her extensive ensemble work, she now performs as a solo artist, and has begun bringing her original songs to her performance repertoire.

Beverly’s teaching style is extremely generous and easy-going, and she has developed very effective ways of communicating skills and techniques that make the music accessible to everyone.

As much as possible, we will offer classes in your areas of interest, so be sure to let us know if there is something you want to concentrate on.

There will, as always, be ample opportunity for socialising and session-ing.

Dates for the week will be May 9th to May 16th, 2020, and the costs are as follows.  All prices include full board and all tuition and facilities, and do not include travel costs.
